Spiritual trauma can be defined in many ways. As therapists who frequently provide Christian Counseling we have seen many people who have been deeply hurt in their walks of faith. Some have held on to their religious beliefs, and others have not. Some grew up experiencing only judgment. Whether it be from their families, their churches, or their communities, they received the message that they were worthless sinners, that God was angry with them, and that they were going to hell. In the midst of this condemnation they never heard the good news of God’s love. Others grew up experiencing intense neglect or abuse, and as a result the ability to trust anyone, including God, had been damaged.
The founder of North Woods, Mark Odland, literally wrote the book on healing spiritual trauma with EMDR therapy, and trains therapists around the world to help their clients heal. But unlike some, who encourage clients to completely abandon their faith, Mark and his team of EMDR therapists create a safe space to explore the parts of a client’s spiritual experience that are traumatic and toxic, as well as the parts that are life-giving and hopeful. They recognize that God’s love is often misrepresented by human beings, and that the message of God’s amazing grace is far too often drowned out by judgment and shame. Rather than forcing an agenda on clients, the EMDR therapists at North Woods help their clients rediscover the good news within their own Christian faith, and help them find lasting healing from the pain.
We have worked with many clients who have experienced an awakening in their faith, become involved in a religious group, and then become swept up in teachings that later proved to be abusive or degrading. In recent years abuse by priests and pastors has come to light. These cases, along with satanic ritual abuse continue to leave the most lasting damage to the children who were victimized. As therapists who also diverse experiences in Christian ministry, we believe that God has given us a unique opportunity.
